University of Texas interns pose with professional staff.

PRINCETON, N.J. —Layoffs. Buyouts. Consolidation.

These three words have become synonymous with the news industry over the past two years. Yet despite the myriad concerns, the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund will send 102 college undergraduate and graduate students to work as copy editors, online producers and business reporters at news organizations nationwide this summer. The interns come from 52 colleges and universities around the country.

Rich Holden, the Fund’s executive director, said, “The fact that we were able to top the 100-intern mark again this year sends a strong signal that news organizations still hold in high regard the Fund and the students it identifies and trains.

Holden added, “We realize that ‘multitasking’ has become essential at more and more news organizations. In addition to our online program, each of the editing training centers devotes at least two days to multimedia training. News organizations expect our students to be well-versed in all aspects of news gathering. Seldom in the past have they been disappointed with the quality of our interns.”

The Fund’s summer internship programs, begun in 1962, will feature nine training sites.

Copy editing interns will be trained for two weeks at: Pennsylvania State University, directed by Dr. Marie Hardin; San Jose State University, Dr. William Tillinghast; Temple University, Dr. Ed Trayes; the University of Central Florida, Dr. Rick Kenney; the University of Missouri, Brian Brooks, and the University of Texas, S. Griffin Singer.
