PRINCETON, N.J. — The Dow Jones News Fund announced the election of David Cho, editor in chief of Barron’s and head of editorial content for Dow Jones Wealth and Investing, as president of the Fund’s board of directors. Cho becomes the News Fund’s ninth president in its 67-year history, succeeding Brent W. Jones, former masthead editor and senior vice president of training, culture and community at The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones.
Cho is an award-winning journalist who joined Barron’s in 2021 after 20 years at the Washington Post. Under his leadership, Barron’s has hit new heights in monthly unique readership and continues to see record numbers of subscribers.
As business editor at the Washington Post, his digital-first focus led to aggressive expansion, both journalistic and geographic, as well as substantial audience growth. Under his leadership, the Washington Post’s business desk won four Gerald Loeb awards for work published in 2019 and 2020. In 2014, David was a member of the Post team that won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for its reporting on the Edward Snowden classified documents leak. He was also the primary editor of a series on flawed medical research that was awarded a George Polk Award in 2013. His series of stories about the 2008 financial crisis was selected by the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism as one of its “100 Great Stories” of the last century.
Cho was a Dow Jones News Fund intern in 1997. He attended training led by Dr. Edward Trayes at Temple University as part of the News Fund’s editing program, and interned at the New York Times.
“David Cho’s journey in the field of journalism has prepared him completely for his role as the new president of Dow Jones News Fund,” said Garry D. Howard, director of corporate initiatives at American City Business Journals, and a member of the board’s nominating committee. “As the business editor at the Washington Post for almost 20 years, in addition to his tenure as editor in chief of Barron’s, David is a perfect leader to replace the remarkable Brent Jones, who was a true professional for DJNF. And as a former DJNF Intern, David knows what it takes to succeed.”
“The Dow Jones News Fund played a critical role for me at a turning point of my career in journalism,” Cho said. “It’s an honor to be part of an organization that has impacted the lives of so many journalists. I’m looking forward to working with a great team as we chart a path forward for the organization.”
During Jones’ tenure as president of the board, the News Fund added new funding; increased its newsroom partnerships; enhanced its flagship summer internship program; and launched an early career program for beginning journalists in resource-strapped local newsrooms. Under his leadership, the News Fund also established the Richard J. Levine Journalism Champion Award in honor of his predecessor; and partnered with New York University to establish the Ed Bradley Journalism Fellowship for promising collegiate journalists.
Jones also focused on board development, adding five new directors over three years, including Cho, who was elected in 2023. At the time, Jones called Cho a “forward thinker who will advance the News Fund’s mission to promote and support successful careers in journalism.”
Before joining the Washington Post in 2001, Cho worked at the Star-Ledger in New Jersey, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Korea Herald.
He received an MBA from Columbia Business School and has master’s degrees from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs. He is a graduate of Yale University and studied piano at the Juilliard School of Music.
