PRINCETON, N.J. — The Dow Jones News Fund invites news organizations to sign up by Dec. 1 for its 2017 summer internship programs in digital media, interactive news editing and business reporting.
The Fund’s signature copy editing program has been rebranded as interactive news editing to reflect the variety of skills interns employ including traditional copy editing plus SEO headline-writing, hyperlinking text, social media management and working with visualizations.
Interactive interns will train at Temple University, Philadelphia; the University of Texas, Austin; the University of Missouri, Columbia, and Pennsylvania State University. Digital interns will be trained at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism. Business reporting and American City Business Journals interns will attend sessions at New York University.
“The recruitment, selection and training of News Fund interns continue to be our highest priorities. We want to ensure all of our interns are ready to perform at professional levels in the digital age no matter the platform,” said Linda Shockley, managing director of the Fund.
News media commit to pay $1,200 per intern to help defray the cost of pre-internship instruction. The funding is passed on to universities where students are housed and taught for a week before reporting to their summer jobs. The minimum salary requirement is $400 per week for at least 10 weeks.
Seven hundred forty-one college juniors, seniors and graduate students applied. Media are asked to sign up by Dec. 1 in time for the start of selection in Dec. 8. Interns may continue to be assigned before training begins in the spring.
Twenty-nine of last summer’s 96 interns have been hired for full-time jobs.
All 16 slots have been filled in a pilot program to train data journalism interns at no cost to news media. The program will be run by Investigative Reporters and Editors at the University of Missouri.
